Use of neonatal assessment tools to predict deficits and disorders in preterm infants.

A guide for mothers.

Neonatal Assessments

Standardized assessment tools within the setting of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have been used to distinguish future developmental delays and disorders, discriminate between various diagnoses, and perform comprehensive evaluations. These tools have guided healthcare professionals towards appropriate intervention services and ways that parents and caregivers could become more involved with their infants care.

Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP)

This test was designed to detect neuromotor delays and atypical motor performance from the age of thirty-four weeks to four months post-term.¹

Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE)

This test was proposed as being one of the oldest forms of neurological examination for infants who were born at risk, term or preterm.² ³
